Similar to buddypress, WP Symposium appears to offer a more complete set of social networking “modules” or plugins. Each method of sharing information (calendar, messaging, pictures, chatting, etc.) is actually a separate plugin in the WordPress installation. The difference is that these plugins are written by the same developer and thus they are written to work together.
BuddyPress comes with a core set of plugins that are written to work together, but the “other” methods of sharing (calendar, pictures, chatting) are not part of the core set. There are plugins written to handle these methods, but they are not written by the same developers that BuddyPress is written by. That leads to the potential that they might not work as well together as the average website creator might like.
All that being said, is one better than the other? Hard to say. They do things differently. The following table reveals some of my discoveries while working with the two.
